The car rental process is divided into three main phases: the booking, the rental, and the return and post-rental phases. While equally important, each of these phases can result in several questions for first-time and seasoned travelers booking a rental car. There are so many choices when it comes to booking your holiday; where to go? What to do? How to explore such varied and vast countries?
Our destinations Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania are perfect for a self-drive holiday and exploring by car. Wide, well-maintained roads and an excellent highway network are in most areas and a good selection of excellent accommodation is available.

What should I do when I encounter animals?
Stay in your vehicle. Never get out of your vehicle if there are animals around. Most national parks have speed limits that rarely exceed 40km, and in many instances you’ll want to drive even slower than that. Some wild animals can be skittish and unpredictable around vehicles, so be ready to stop suddenly whenever animals are around (and even when you just suspect they might be nearby).
You’ll quickly discover how close is too close. Approach slowly and watch for any signs that the animal in question may be becoming agitated. Never get between a mother and her offspring. Remember, too, that some animals such as rhinos have poor eyesight and are liable to charge if they sense (or even imagine) a threat. In general, always drive with great care. Slow down to avoid accidents. Stop and admire the view. And be prepared to wait for animals to pass by, do something interesting or come down to the waterhole to drink.
What should I consider when choosing a self-drive trip?
The biggest question is whether self-driving is for you. The experience of driving yourself around Africa may be exciting, but it’s not for everyone. If this is supposed to be a relaxing holiday, consider a guided safari. On a self-drive camping safari, you’ll spend quite a bit of time each day setting and packing up camp, and cooking, not to mention sleeping on what are usually thin mattresses. You also need to be realistic in what you hope to achieve, making sure that daily distances are sensible. Be sure to build in a few rest days along the way.
If I would like to extend my stay/my car booking, add tours/excursions or make changes to my itinerary

Please note that changes to accommodation and vehicles in the package can lead to additional charges.
Can I find petrol stations on the route?
In most settlements, regardless how small, there are petrol stations. In Uganda, all petrol stations offer both regular petrol and diesel. Price can range per litre approximately. Some stations are not serviced. There, petrol can be purchased by cash. All routes are set so that you will have at least one chance to top up on petrol each day.
How do I choose the right vehicle for my needs?
The following points are important to consider:
- What is your budget? How much are you willing to spend?
- Do you prefer an automatic or a manual transmission?
- How much space do you need for passengers, luggage, and perhaps extras/camping equipment?
- Car rental companies offer a wide range, also in regard to luxury. What are your needs in terms of comfort?
- Are you staying at hotels, lodging, or do you want to go camping?
