I and my wife booked a rooftop tent car for self-drive in Uganda and we worked with Moses from 4×4 Car Hire Uganda. Our booking period was so quick as we were on our holiday in Zanzibar and then we got a mind to go to Uganda and see the chimpanzee and gorillas before 01st July 2024 when the permits will be increased from $ 200 to 250 and $ 700 to $ 800 US per person.
Through our what’s app communication Moses was so very fast in responding to our questions and to make the matters simple we finalized our primates trekking deal and we were supposed to send the money to book them before our arrival and he advised that since we have less than a week to arrive better we use the western union means to send him the money and we were like scared but before we decided to wire him the money he provided all his credentials like passport copy, phone number and the address and then we effected the pay.
Professionally, trusted and reliable, this guy is he went ahead and withdraw the money and he notified me receiving the money and then he went and paid for our permits and what made him to fully trust him taking images of the permits and he shared them with me.
Therefore, we confirmed the 4×4 rooftop tent jeep and all the camping gears and we again confirmed the discussion of our route that was East – North – Southern route trying to match with the dates of our permits already paid from the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
Upon arrival at the nice-looking renovated Entebbe Airport, we met with Mike a colleague to Moses and we went into a detailed briefing about the car and looking at it we started mesmerizing about our route and he showed us everything regarding the car and the camping gears, we took video of it so that on the last day we bring the jeep as we took it.
Since, this first day our stopover was Jinja we started the journey and we gave Mike a rift up to the express highway point of Kajansi for him to proceed to office in Kampala and we continued with the express highway as way of dodging the traffic flow in the Kampala city center. Reaching the national stadium “Namboole” we left the express highway and joined the Jinja highway and here the traffic was flowing and when we reached Mukono town we took the right way Katosi – Jinja highway until the bridge.
You may ask yourself how I came to know these routes but remember from our briefing whole this was advised by Mike. We drove over the new Jinja bridge and then we took the route to the former Bujjagali falls and around 04PM we arrived at the Nile River Explorer Camp and then we parked as directed by the camp staff and then started setting up our 20 minutes rooftop tent.
We used the camp’s wash rooms and around 07PM we entered the camp’s restaurant and ordered for the dinner and also, we enjoyed the country “Nile Beer” that is an icon of the River Nile we stayed along the shores. While in Jinja you can participate in so many adventurous activities like the white-water rafting, bungee jumping, water bugging, tubing the Nile, water sliding which we did complementary due to we took our night at this camp managing the water sliding. Then in the evening in a group with other travelers we enjoyed the sunset the boat cruise and this cruise goes towards the turbines of the Owen falls and it is amazing though some snacks are complementary served the boat cruise comes with the open bar.
After on our next day we visited the source of the Nile and took a local boat towards the exact point of the source. Visiting here you will listen to the various “Lusoga” words calling you to support the ladies and men selling souvenirs and jewelries locally crafted by them.

With Kidepo when it rains in the mountains of Moroto sometimes water flow tends to run towards into the park Narus River so if you are not keen you may find that it is full and you cannot again access the starting point of the journey and it is advisable to go with rangers who have the knowledge of this park to always not be affected by such incidents.

After Kidepo we transferred to Murchison Falls National Park and we spent 02 nights in this park and camping at Fort Murchison Camp and enjoyed staying here as the area is hot, we spent day chilling at the swimming pool point. Game drives in Murchison are so much rewarding with the wildlife viewing and bird watching. The park has got several tracks to follow and here you can easily spot the big cats and other wildlife species.
After game drives in the northern sector, you can also enjoy the unforgettable boat cruise to the bottom of the falls and for those looking to spot the rare shoe bill can take the boat to the delta. Enjoy the boat ride along the Kazinga channel that connects Ramsar Lake George into Lake Edward and on this cruise expect the view of more wildlife and birds along the shores.
